The 3rd Annual Glass City Chamber Music Competition

The 2024 Glass City Chamber Music Competition in Toledo, Ohio is funded by The Greater Toledo Community Foundation and organized by Toledo Alliance for the Performing Arts and the University of Toledo Department of Music.



When

Sunday, April 28, 2024.

The tentative time is 11 am – 6 pm, EST (11 am -1 pm: junior division, 3 -6 pm: senior division). A complete schedule will be posted on the website and sent to each participants upon the application’s closure on March 25, 2024. 

The GCCMC will be on the same day as the Glass City Marathon. A detour map will be sent to finalists.

The competition is open to public.

  • Application form
  • Pre-screening video
  • Application fee of $10 per person in ensemble



Eligibility

Instruments
2024 competition is open to chamber ensembles comprised of strings, woodwinds, and piano. Ensembles may consist of 3 to 6 musicians on any of aforementioned instruments, may not use more than one piano, and may not repeat members in other ensembles. 

Age

  • Senior (College) Division: Performers up to age 24 as of April 28, 2024 or those who are enrolled in college/graduate school.
  • Junior (High School) Division: Performers up to age 18 as of April 28, 2024 or those who are enrolled in high school.

Repertoire

Senior (College) Division

  • Two contrasting movements or two complete single-movement works, both for live competition and pre-screening videos.
  • Live competition performance length will be about 8-20 minutes in total.
  • The minimum length of pre-screening videos is 8 minutes in total.

Junior (High School) Division

  • One movement or complete single-movement work of performers’ choice.
  • Live competition performance length: about 4-15 minutes.
  • The minimum length of pre-screening video is 4 minutes.

Applicants must send the video(s) of the ensemble’s repertoire which will be performed for the live competition.

If the duration of the repertoire exceeds the time limit, the jury may ask the performers to exclude repeats or cut the beginning or ending.

Glass City Chamber Music Competition encourages diversity and creativity in the choice of repertoire. 

The competition organizers may require the participants to send the scores of their repertoire.



Application Requirements

Application Form
The application form is available electronically on Toledo Alliance for Performing Arts’ Acceptd portal (link on “Apply” page). All applications must be completed no later than 11:59 pm, EST, Friday, March 8, 2024. 

Pre-Screening Video

  • The minimum length of the video(s) is 8 minutes in total for the Senior Division and 4 minutes for the Junior Division.
  • Senior Division applicants must submit a video or two videos of two contrasting movements.
  • Video recording(s) must be performed by all members who will be performing for the live competition. Please make sure that all ensemble members are in the frame for the entire duration of the video. 
  • Music performed in the pre-screening round must be performed at the live round.
  • Audio-only recording  is not acceptable.
  • Editing and effects are not allowed.
  • You will not be judged on the quality of your video, but it is important that we are able to see and hear you clearly. Mobile phone recordings work perfectly fine.  
  • You may either directly upload your video(s) to the application portal or provide the link(s) to the video uploading services such as Vimeo or Youtube. 
  • When using Vimeo or Youtube , please send an Unlisted link. If using YouTube, please make sure that it is marked as “Not Made for Children” for ease of sharing. Download links will not be accepted. 

Application Fee
Application fee is $10/person (Trio=$30, Quartet=$40, etc.)



Announcement of Finalists

Notification of acceptance to the live competition will be sent by Monday, March 25, 2024. The performance time for each ensemble will be sent shortly afterwards. 

Performers for the live competition will be asked to email a digital copy of sheet music for their repertoire and a photo of the ensemble for publicity.

Performers for the live competition must be available for the entire duration of their division program (10 am -12 pm for the Junior Division and 1-4 pm for the Senior Division). We are unable to accommodate any requests for the performance time.

  • Senior Division: $1,000
  • Junior Division: $500

Audience Award

  • Senior Division: $500
  • Junior Division: $500
 

Special Prizes

  • Overall Toledo Local Award: $1,000
    • Junior or Senior ensembles located in the counties that the Toledo Symphony Orchestra serves are eligible for this award. The following counties in Ohio are included: Defiance, Fulton, Hancock, Henry, Lucas, Ottawa, Paulding, Putnam, Sandusky, Seneca, Wood, and Williams. The following counties in Michigan are included: Hillsdale, Lenawee, and Monroe.
  • String Quartet Summer Residence at Glass City Summer Strings: $3,000
    • Residence award will be given to a select String Quartet in the senior division. This award will be passed to the next group if the SQ declines.
    • July 8-13, 2024, in Toledo, OH
    • Residence will include coaching Glass City Summer String Students and one formal performance.



Other

  • The organizer reserves the right to photograph and record (audio & video) all rehearsals, competition rounds and concerts. These may be broadcast on radio, TV, or online without further permission given by the contestants, who are not entitled to claim any remuneration for these recordings and broadcasts. 
  • Jury’s decisions are final and may not be challenged. The jury retains the right to stop any performance. 
  • The GCCMC committee reserves the right for the final interpretation of all rules and regulations.
